Good For You, Good For The World

It’s a good feeling when you can buy something that benefits you a lot while doing no harm to the planet. A Mattress Mathew bed is one of those products. We make our beds out of 100% all-natural latex that is an environmentally friendly and sustainable crop so we get the best material for you while being environmentally conscious. The process behind the harvest is simple and very interesting.

Latex starts its life as the milky sap of the rubber tree. It is stored in tubes just under the bark of the tree that run in spirals down the length of the trunk. To begin the process of harvesting the trees have to first be around 10 years old so that they can produce enough latex while still being healthy. The bark is stripped off in small sections on one side of the tree, revealing the latex veins and allowing it to slowly flow into an attached container. The container takes about half a day to fill up and is collected a couple times in a day for around 6 years. This collected latex is then transported from the collection facility to manufacturing facilities that make the latex mattresses.

After that section of the tree has run dry, a small section of bark on the opposite side of the tree is stripped off to repeat the process. By the time another 6 years has passed, the previously stripped off bark has healed, and the process is once again repeated on this side, but higher up the tree. This goes on for a total of 24 years, during which time new trees have been planted for after the harvested trees are cut down and used for lumber. These trees and the harvest process allows for lots of biodiversity around the trees which make it great for the planet. A sustainable crop that makes an incredibly versatile material that makes a Mattress Mathew bed to bring amazing sleep to your life.
